Today I decided to look at the seeds I'd remembered to collect from the garden. I found some calendula, scabiosa and lavender seeds. I have tried to plant lavender from seed before. Successfully so, I might add. They say with lavender you are better off taking cuttings because it is the only way you are guaranteed the exact copy. I do that too. It works either way for me.

I am excited about the scabiosa, though. It'll be a first. Calendula on the other hand has never been a problem. All in all, I am optimistic.

I am becoming really good at taking daily walks and especially proud of the fact that the snow and the cold hasn't stopped me yet. After my walk in the afternoon, I treated myself to a much deserved coffee and piece of cake. Walking has its advantages. I can eat sweets without feeling guilty. The thing is, between the two of us, J and I do a lot of baking. The cake we had today was made by J on Friday. Quite delicious!

Seven years ago we planted two hundred birch trees in our wild garden. They are now about ten meters high. We are really excited about the prospect of making wine from our birch trees. The idea was just to have some trees growing in our wild garden. Well, at least, until late last year. It is a long story and so we'll let it go for now.

The soup made from freshly dug Jerusalem Artichokes from the vegetable garden tasted great last evening. It is always a hit. I always use the recipe from BBC good food. With the hand blender I got for x-mas, making artichoke soup is a snap!

True, one doesn't get to spend time in the garden at this time of year. That doesn't mean that you can't enjoy plant life. At this time of year, the indoor plants play an important role. Of course you can have indoor plants all year round but somehow they steal the spotlight in the colder months. I am particularly sharp at spotting a good bargain when it comes to indoor plants at the moment. When I spotted these good looking plants at a giveaway price, I pounced.

Snowdrops and other garden news.

Oh dear! It seems I somehow missed this cluster of snowdrops yesterday. I find it very strange because it is just near the place where I spotted the so called fastest snowdrop. First from the blocks, I remember saying. Anyway these are way ahead. This morning, I was taking more photos of the snowdrop from yesterday when J asked if I'd seen the cluster of snowdrops in bloom just behind me.

Yesterday was really a lovely day considering that this is early January. A fine day to be in the garden indeed. I managed to plant the holly out in the garden. There were actually four holly plants in this little pot. That is what I call a good bargain! I'd spotted this variety of holly before Christmas but only managed to get hold of it on Friday.

While I was at it, I used the chance to cover some of the plants with evergreens from the conifer in the vegetable garden. Besides, it will do the vegetable garden good with less shade

I believe this snowdrop is first from the blocks. Well, in our front garden at least. I haven't been around the grounds much so things might be happening there too.

Our front garden has a spot, wedged between the vegetable patch and the flower garden, depicting life in the wilderness as would be seen at the moment. The ground is strewn with old leaves, twigs and all sort of matter usually seen in a forest. The snowdrops of course are sticking their heads out almost everywhere.

The purplish-pink hellebores are looking lovely. I am not risking anything this year so they are covered with some evergreens for protection. Last year, they never went past the bud stage.

Outdoor X-mas DIY decos.

It all started with the crooked hazelnut tree. Corylus Avellana or Harry lauder's walking stick to others is great as a base for chrismas outdoor decorations. Others prefer using twigs from the willow. We have a few willow shrubs down by the natural pond but corylus is right in the front garden so I decided to go with it this time. Besides, corylus avellana (contorta) comes with extras in the form of catkins right now.The next step was to add on a few evergreens. Before completion, the deco was put to fit on the door by J.

The half done deco has been hanging outdoors for some days waiting for me to finish up when I found time. Today, I got round to adding a few more things. There is still some sedum in the garden so I used the flower heads to add some colour.

This is it, more or less. There is always place for a few more things, though.

I like this plant. Each time I look at it, I long for the leaves of the ginkgo biloba. Ginkgo biloba is top of my list of must-have plants. For now, I make do with trying out my picnik skills on this indoor plant. I keep hoping that one day, hopefully, in the near future I'd be trying out my illustrator skills on it too.

Indeed when the garden seems to have nothing much to offer on a day like today, one seeks solace in the green of the Rhododendron. There is hope out here, the Rhododendron seems to be saying. True, when you wander for a while in the garden, there is a bit of new growth already. One can't but marvel at the wonder that is nature. Deep down, you know that, no matter what spring will surely come. With this in mind, it makes it easier to take life one moment at a time.

Just for the record, I'd like to say we have been rather nice to the Rhododendrons of late. They have been given all the manure they need.

It is the third of December and it's a rainy Saturday morning. It feels just right with the raindrops on the windows.

The indoor pot plants look lovely against the raindrops. It is time for the indoor plants to come into their own. There is enough light outside for me to see that most of the garden plants have decided to call it a day. The Chrysanthemums are still in bloom but it won't be for long.

It is not all lost in the garden though, for the Christmas Rose is in bud. I saw tiny pink buds popping up from under the fallen leaves.

Every year, summer gives us a lot of squash which we can't use up. On the other hand we can be thankful that the squash serves as autumn decorations. What we cannot use goes back in the garden as compost manure. Every year, as long as there is squash in the garden, we'll be sure of this kind of setup. We have plenty of evergreens in the garden which are ideal for use in outdoor decorations. The evergreens can also be used when making X-mas decorations. The arrangement in the picture is still a work-in-progress.

I planted more Vinca in the garden but this time it is the variegated kind. I have a soft spot for variegated plants. They take the dullness out of any plant. These were growing on grounds soon to be bulldozed. I thought it would be a pity to let these variegated plants go to waste. I took a few rootings in early June and hoped for the best. Vinca, I have found out is a very easy plant to grow.

Autumn, as most people would know, is a great time for dividing perennials which have outgrown their space. I love Sedum and managed to make three extra plants from the old one. It is at the moment still quite spectacular in the garden. This time, the plan is to have them grown in containers. That way, they can be placed where the garden appears bare especially in autumn.

The Red Dogwood is a shrub that looks very attractive in winter. It looks spectacular against the white of snow in winter. It is also used in decorations. Last year, I tried to plant some from cut twigs. The project was not successful in the end.

Anyway, I have changed strategy and this time I have used the layering method. In fact, that is what J had done years ago to get the Red Dogwood (Red Cornus) that is doing very well in the wild garden. This way you are almost certain of success.

Autumn is a great time to plant new plants. I love lavender and used the season to plant more lavender plants between J's wine vines. It took some convincing to let J give me space between his vines. That story for another day!

Stevia, sweeter than sweet!

I was pleasantly surprised to chance stevia plants on offer in the plant section of the supermarket. I'd been on the hunt for this plant for quite some time. In fact, I thought it wasn't yet approved for sale in Denmark. The thing is I have become very suspicious of sugar for obvious reasons. Anything that could do the job just as well and without the nasty side effects would be welcome.

The single-type mums from the garden are also great for indoor vases. There are just so many flowers on these mums that I don't feel guilty about cutting them for the vase. I wouldn't mind planting more of this type but in a different colour.

Autumn weather has been quite still. As a result, the ground is covered in a carpet of leaves. When it blows hard the leaves on the ground tend to be dispersed in such a way that some places are left bare. For the time being it is fingers crossed for more days with no strong winds. It is really looking beautiful. True, the leaves will have to be cleared in some parts but for now, we'll let nature be.

The vegetable garden is signing off. There are a few hardies like the swiss chard and the leek still putting up a good fight.

We discovered that some plants couldn't be bothered with doing what most of the other plants in the vegetable garden were doing. We noticed these seedlings going about their business as if it was only natural to be starting life now. Our best bet is that they are from swiss chard seeds. We wish them luck!

I have read somewhere that there is a type of cyclamen that can grow outdoors in the colder months of the year. When I spotted this cyclamen at the florist's, I was sure I'd finally found it. She had the potted type on sale too. It was the first time I was seeing cyclamen sold in this fashion. I doubt if I'd known what it was hadn't there been a tag with cyclamen written on. I was not on a plant buying mission but these plants happened to be exhibited outside the shop. It is a well decorated shop so I usually pass by just to see what they have. Before I knew it, I was imagining little pockets of cyclamen in the grass in our garden in early spring.

I dashed into the shop and asked the florist if it was the cyclamen that could be grown outdoors. As far as I was concerned they looked about ready to be put in the soil. It all made a lot of sense really. I must say I was quite surprised when she told me that it was to be put indoors. Not only that but that there was no need of potting it. It could just be left alone and just sprayed with water once in a while. At this point she took out a water sprayer and sprayed the bare cyclamen just ever so slightly. (She had gone out and taken a sample in.) She went on to say that it will eventually flower but that it might need to be left dormant later on.

The idea of looking at a bare cyclamen is not appealing to me. At least not yet. So I decided to add a bit of green moss and stuff you'd find outdoors at the moment. I am very excited about the whole concept, though.

Though there is still a selection of flowers in the autumn garden, the choice is limited compared to the summer garden. This is why one comes to really appreciate the shrubs in the garden for the amazing foliage. Perhaps flowers for the indoor vases are limited but foliage from the many shrubs just about makes up. I think this display consisting of twigs from the spirea bush isn't shabby at all.

Autumn is a great time for DIY decorations. I used rowan berries from our garden. They are not to be seen in the garden at the moment as they have been blown away.

Bringing them indoors is a smart way of enjoying them longer. A certain lady had tipped me about the merits of freezing berries before using them in decorations. I tried this on these berries and I must say it works. They keep longer!

I like the red colour of the berries against the white of the vases. A simple but beautiful combination, I think. All in all a very inexpensive way of adding colour in the house. The vases are from a second hand shop. I knew I'd made a bargain even then!

Finally, the beetroot harvest is in place. I must say we are quite pleased with the result. There is more than enough for months to come. This year, we went back to planting our favourite type which is kind of long as opposed to the roundish type. For more on beetroot, check out this lovely beet site.

I got round to giving the asparagus a much needed weeding. We haven't had the pleasure of tasting the asparagus yet as it takes years from planting to the first harvest. The waiting is made easy by the fact that the asparagus is actually very decorative at the moment. It has beautiful fern-like foliage with red berries. Quite spectacular I'd say!

You don't have to take a walk in the woods to come across acorns or fungi. On an October day like this, acorns and fungi are all over.

On this October day, the flower garden and the dahlias in particular, showed signs of a very tough night. Mr Frost had passed through. I cut as many as I could for the indoor vases.

In the vegetable garden, it is business as usual if you ask the Jerusalem artichokes. Mr Frost doesn't scare them one bit!

Recipe: My daughter's cooking class at Mønsted primary school.

Autumn isharvest time. Nevertheless, I didn't expect we'd still be picking squash fromthe vegetable garden. There has been a lot of apples lately and that has led toa lot of recipes containing apples. Apple muffins, apple pie ... Name justabout anything with apple and we were on to it. The squash was very welcome asyou would imagine. I knew just where to find a recipe. An old favourite andvery easy to make. No fuss there!

It iscoffee time and as I tuck in a piece of the newly baked squash cake, I watchwith interest as the farmer ( He lives down the road) is busy with the task ofgetting his maize crop in.

These days, if you spot a group of people whispering among themselves, and if you somehow make out that they are probably talking about gardening, then you bet they are on about Georgina. The old girl is back with a vengeance. I say, no wonder. Just look around you at the moment! Shunned by many for too long, Georgina seems to have made a comeback.

I'd spotted a rainbow in the horizon. By the time I'd gotten hold of my camera, it was gone. Gone, just like that! Sometimes you can be lucky that the rainbow lingers for a while and no matter how slow you are, you'll capture it.

Later on, the same day, I'd driven into town and behold there it was, this rainbow. I got busy at once and rolled down the window to get the shot. It was raining at the time so I quickly rolled up the window again.

Determined to get a good image, I took a few shots through the closed window.

The truth is, I love taking shots of raindrops ...

Asters, a colourful affair this autumn.

The flowers in this part of the garden have almost all the colours of the rainbow.

These asters are perennials and were planted last year. They come in two shades and have been in bloom for some time.

The larger ones are annuals and were planted in containers at the beginning of this summer. They bloom later than the perennials.

Between them, these asters have really transformed this patch of the garden. That is the beauty of container gardening because it can be used to move plants to parts of the garden in need of some colour.

Scottishhighland cattle grazing near the back entrance of The Tax Center Aarhuspremises in Højbjerg. I chanced these cattle on my way to the Tax Officepremises using a back-way short cut in connection with the 3 day course I wasattending on excise-duties.

According to the information, they are supposed tograze the grounds in order to promote growth of flowers, a certain frog habitat, smallbird habitat etc. etc. You might want to read more on highlander cattle on Wikipedia.

Rose and her beautiful hips.

This blue door in the garden behind Skovgaard's museum is very bold and really attracts one's attention. (Demands one's attention I'd say!)

A rambling rose climbs up the wall displaying its red hips. The hips are at their best at the moment. I wish I had this rose in our garden because then I'd use the hips in my autumn decorations. Some of the roses in our garden can become beautiful hips if left alone. The problem is, I can't stop myself from dead-heading them in order to encourage more flowering. Perhaps one should try leaving them to form hips next year.

What is one to do given the countless opportunities picnik presents to play with pictures? I couldn't keep myself from using the ripples effect in picnik.

Unable to decide whether the smudge effect looked better than the ripples effect, I decided to play with the smudge effect too. That is what being spoilt for choice can do to you!

DIY autumn decorations and a bit of gardening.

Last evening, I finally attended the evening class. The class being the one day course in making autumn decorations using stuff from nature. I was really excited and I was not disappointed.It was a great class where you just got plenty of inspiration from the tutor and the others in the group. We were a group of eleven.

At the end of it all, I was very impressed with myself. With a lot of help, I ended up with this lovely creation consisting of heather, hortensia and red berries. I'd used the weekend to gather the heather and the berries. The tutor had loads of stuff you could buy and use. The class was held in her flower shop in Viborg. I thought the hortensia looked lovely.

This afternoon, I managed to harvest some autumn raspberry though a lot was beyond salvage due to the heavy rains. Anyway there was enough and there will be more in a few days. I managed to plant the two blueberry plants bought a few days ago. Our very first blueberry plants!

It is really rewarding to be able to just pick flowers from the garden. There was the little matter of J not really into cutting flowers from the garden. The dahlias are part of the charm at the moment and the fact that he is the man behind the dahlias in particular, made matters just worse. Luckily, a lot of gardeners swear to the fact that the more you cut dahlias the more they flower.

This time of the year, the gardener who has a vegetable patch is more or less made. True, the weed is about neck to neck with the vegetables. Just don't let this put you off. The most important thing is that the vegetable garden is ready for harvest.

On that note, I say we do not let the lack of weeding get to us. Well, things could always look less messy, I agree. Hey, who cares? For the time being it is some roasted beetroot, potatoes and carrots from our garden. Like it tends to happen in high summer, it does get a bit chilly on occasion. Nothing a few logs can't handle. Just adds on to a cosy atmosphere, you see.

Oh, I almost forgot, ... enter the dahlias from the flower garden and you get the idea...

I love pinks, just not on wheelbarrows!

There are a lot of pink shades in the garden. The pink phlox has been in bloom for some time. A few weeks ago, we discovered that the phlox we got from L in Viborg was in bloom. Though pink, it was noticeably different from the old type we have always had. The flower petals were a different combination of pinks, the petals overlapped and the foliage was a lighter green. They are both beautiful in their own way. The sedum too is dotted with pink. The butterflies love them! As if we haven't enough of pink, the wild bleeding-hearts are blooming once more. They have given the other bleeding-hearts a run for their money!

Oh, the wheelbarrow, the pink wheelbarrow, that is. Well, J left it where he had seen it - in the shop! He'd announced last week that he had seen en sød lille trillebør i pink. Den er lige noget for dig. ( I have seen a little pink wheelbarrow. It will suit you just fine.) There was no doubt that he quickly understood that I took it as a threat! Anyway, enough of that, I got the orange coloured one instead!

The mirabelle plums fill both gardens and landscapes with their bright colours. They are not only sweet to eat but also truly decorative in colour. I have plans for them already. The thing is they are part of a host of ingredients in my rom tropf. (inspired by Camilla Plum) The drink has proved to be a hit on all occassions. Come X-mas, we'll be well stocked up. The important ingredient is, of course, rum.

The shapes too differ. Some are completely round and others are slightly oval.

Red or white wine? Why choose when you can have both?

J's caprifolia, finally blooms.

The caprifolia is in bloom for the first time ever. We have been waiting for this moment but more so J. The caprifolia is one of his favourite plants.
